Cape Ann Earthquake is felt in Boston.

November 18, 1755

Beginning at 4:30 a.m., the earthquake shakes Boston for more than four minutes, topples some 1,500 chimneys and the weather vane on Faneuil Hall, and causes old springs to dry up and new ones flow. Ministers claim the earthquake was a sign of God’s displeasure with the town’s citizens. Subsequently estimated as being at a magnitude of 6.2 [6.0-Kriel, 7.0-Weston], it occurs 17 days after the Lisbon earthquake.
